SUCCESS IN COMBINING PHARMACY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BUSINESS

Someone’s success in business can come from anywhere. Gideon Hartono, as the example, admitted that his success in developing pharmacy business was started from opening photo studio.

Combining two different things is not easy. Health matter should be handled by those who have educational background in medical. Meanwhile, photo studio should be handled by those who have knowledge in photography.

Those two different worlds can be handled by Gideon Hartono at once. The initial capital to get his doctoral degree and open a pharmacy was earned from running photo studio. In fact, the man who is often called as Gideon, came from a poor family. However, because of his will and spirit in moving forward is high, he started to open small business from film washing.

Gideon’s idea to open that business was started from his concern towards his family’s economic condition which was in mediocre income. Since he was in elementary school, he wanted to be a doctor. Looking at his family’s economic condition, it seemed to be impossible.

However, Allah had different plan and gave a way to achieve his goal from washing black-and-white photo, with a help of one camera. That business was run well for a quite long time.

The reason he chose that business was because it was very needed and highly demanded by people. When doing that profession, Gideon was very discipline and maximized his time in between school and business. For working, he spared his time for 2 to 4 hours. Moreover, Gideon wanted to study medical.

He understood that medical school needed expensive tuition. That is why Gideon kept working with his brain to get accepted at Gadjah Mada University, one of public universities in Yogyakarta.

Along with the development in technology, Gideon did not stay quiet. The knowledge he got in the university was applied to his business so that it could be more developing. From his hard work, his business developed well and he could start new business in pharmacy, which is Apotek K-24 that expanded across Indonesia.

He got that lucky star after graduating from Medical Faculty of UGM, and then he was accepted as civil servant and assigned at the puskesmas, a community health center in Yogyakarta. The idea to build pharmacy showed up when he checked the condition of people’s health around him which was quite pathetic. Moreover, when people were looking for medicine in the middle of the night.

Because since he was child, he got business experience in photo washing, with the mediocre capital and faith, Gideon tried to open Apotek K-24 that opens for 24 hours, 7 days. The result is now the franchised pharmacy has 38 branches.
